The music video for "See you again" has references to both performance based and a narrative based music video. to begin with, there are many close up shots of the artists playing the piano and singing as well as a story being told with movie clips from the film franchise "Fast & Furious" used to promote Fast & Furious 7. The song was originally a tribute to Paul Walker after he died mid way through filming Fast & Furious 7 and the song soon became very popular and featured at the end of the film.
In Goodwin;s theory, the idea of lyrics be linked to visuals can be seen within this music video which a typically found in many narrative based music videos. At the end of the video on the final chorus the lyrics are "when I see you again" and the cars that were on the same road then split and go there separate ways. This was a reference to Paul walker and Vin Diesel in the film going there own ways as well as referring to the two friends seeing each other again in heaven possibly after Paul walker passed away.
"See you again" coming under the hip-hop/ rap genre. genre characteristics are something that is expected to be seen within the music video. Genre characteristics are certain traits associated with the style of music for example a music video for the genre rock, will likely be a performance based music video with frequent close up shots of guitars etc. and a band performing on stage. However, rap and hip-hop music videos, usually feature sports cars and expensive jewellery which is evident in this music video even though this inst a typical hip-hop genre style video.
The record label which the artists are signed to could have had certain demands/ requests within this music video for example, frequent close up shots of the artist which occurs often throughout this video. The use of close up shots on Charlie Puth playing the piano in a performance based style appears to the audience as if he is specifically addressing the audience, almost as if he is singing directly to them.
An inter textual reference is also illustrated in the music video as the song was written for the film Fast & Furious 7 and certain clips from the film have been included within the music video. For example, scenes featuring Paul Walker from the movie have featured in this video as the song at the end of the film is a tribute to him.
This task has developed my understanding of Goodwin's theory and the 8 main principles of his theory and how they are applied to existing music videos. These principles need to be considered when producing a music video in order for it to be successful according to the theory. we have chosen our narrative for our music video where we have taken into account the reference between lyrics and visuals however, we are currently in the process of creating our shot list where we will ensure that there are multiple close up shots of the artist, performance shots as well as including generic conventions of our genre (Indie Pop).
