Notes on Real Media Texts (Inspiration)

Our narrative took inspiration from a film called "Charlie St. Cloud" as it involves two brothers that are involved in a car crash where the main characters younger brother was killed. Throughout the rest of the film, the main character feels responsible for his brothers death and is constantly living in the past. We have taken this idea and applied it to our music video narrative as the beginning of the video is where the car crash takes place and throughout the rest of the video, the artist looks depressed and the lyrics relate to the narrative that we have chosen.

In the film,  the main character constantly visits the woods to play catch with his brother who is a ghost in the film after the crash at the beginning. We used this concept in our music video however, changed it a bit instead, in our video the artist will revisit places that he went with his brother in order to reflect back on old memories.

As a group we also analysed existing music video within our genre (Indie Pop) to identify key codes and conventions of the genre. This also helped to understand the most common types of camera angles used within this genre, I found that close-up shots are one of the most predominantly used shot types within our genre. Having said this, our chosen artist/band (The Canopy Climbers) do not have many music videos and he ones that they do have do not follow the codes and conventions of the genre or follow a narrative or include performance shots.
