Goodwins Theory Notes

Goodwin's 7 main principles:

  • Links between visuals and lyrics
  • Links between music and visuals
  • Genre characteristics
  • Intertextual  reference
  • Notions of looking
  • Demands of the record label
  • Performance based, narrative based or concept based music videos

It is important to have considered the 7 main principles of Goodwin's theory as all 7 points play an important role in a music video. Links between visuals and lyrics is a key feature of many music videos meaning that although all of these principles aren't necessarily necessary but some points like this one almost always feature in a music video. This will help when coming around to creating our own music video as this theory suggest everything that needs to be included or what the music video will need to be based off of.

Below are links to music videos that follow Goodwin's theory:

The music video above has multiple references to the lyrics which is the first principle in Goodwin's theory. The music video is also narrative based as a story is told through the lyrics and the picture on screen. Links between music and visuals also can be seen in this video as it is rap/ hip-hop and many generic conventions of this genre can be seen such as expensive jewellery, cars etc.

Revising the 7 main principles of Goodwin's theory and applying them to existing music videos has furthered my knowledge of seeing the theories being applied to real life situations like this video here. when creating my own music video I'll need to consider the 7 principles and decide whether ill be including them in my final music video.
