What makes a good student video?

Because a student music video will not have the funding that an official video by an artist would have the overall quality of the finished product will not be the same. A student video will not be able to cast recognisable character/artists or will not have the funding or authority to film in certain locations or use particular props within the filming of the music video. In order to make a successful video without these factors, the video should mainly be narrative based with some performance shots however, the charters in the piece should play an anonymous role instead of being portrayed as a celebrity as this is easier to pull off and make look professional. The genre of the video also needs to be considered for example, the indie genre usually cast character that play an anonymous role in the music video and are usually fairly low budget as public places are usually the locations that are filmed rather than private mansions which would be expected in a hip-hop music video for example. Furthermore, the codes and conventions of the chosen genre need to be considered for example, for my chosen genre (Indie Pop) typical conventions are public places, casual clothing, strong narrative and filter/tones used to give the piece a sense of sad emotion. Because of this, these conventions will need to be considered and applied to our music video in order to make it successful within the genre and appealing to its target audience as they will have expectations for the video and they need to be met. A variety of shot types also need to be considered especially common ones used in the genre and ones relevant to the narrative of the video for example, high angles on characters that are seen as innocent/ powerless.

I can use all of this information and my research in order to create a good student music video, I will take on board generic conventions to make it relatable to my genre and use the different techniques that I have learnt in order to create  a good quality piece.
