The purpose of a Music Video

A music video usually delivers a message to the audience and are usually in the form of a narrative based, performance based and concept based videos. Narrative music videos are usually the most entertaining form of music video as a story is told within the video. This will usually hook the audience/viewer as this is personally my favourite form of music video. The purpose of a music video is to entertain the audience, this also helps people to remember the song. Finally, the main reason for a music video is to promote the song and it is one of the tracks best forms of advertising. A music video is promotional for both the song and the artist, therefore there are lots of music videos produced for the latest songs.

Narrative:

This video follows Todorovs Theory as there is an equilibrium at the start where Enrique Iglesias and Jennifer Love Hewitt are together, car breaks down and are attacked is the disequilibrium, Iglesias tries to restore the equilibrium by fighting the men, he dies but know that Hewitt is safe which is the new equilibrium.

Performance:

Performance based music videos usually focus on the artist/band performing the song. This is usually more commonly found in the genre Rock however, Maroon 5 did this in their video for Sunday Morning. At the beginning of the video, the song was played at a Karaoke night and then it shows the band recording the song which has been done mainly to promote the band rather than the song.

Concept:

Paradise is a unique video that is based around a single idea that isn't related to the song at all however, it is very memorable because of its unique plot. The video is about the lead singer dressed in an elephant costume trying to find the rest of his band dressed as elephants. The video was filmed in various locations such as the London underground and with all of the wildlife in Africa.


From this research into the three main types of music video it helps prepare me for when i create my own music video. This allows me to determine the difference between the three and which will be more applicable to the song/genre that I choose.
