Why were music videos created?

Music videos were created for promotional purposes as well as for entertainment for their target audience.

What was the most expensive music video?

The most expensive music video was Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson's "Scream" that cost $10.7 million. The video music video that won a Grammy for best short form music video was set on a spaceship and watched by an estimated 64 million people.

Most watched music videos

The top 5 most viewed music videos on YouTube to date are Gangnam Style (PSY), See you again (Wiz Khalifa & Charlie Puth), Uptown funk (Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars), Blank space (Taylor Swift) and Hello (Adele).

Most popular music videos from each decade

1980's- Michael Jackson "Thriller" (1983)- The full version of the music video was 13 minutes long however, a shorter version was released as well. The dance scenes was all shot in one take without any cuts and was performed hundreds of times before it was perfect. This music video had a great narrative and was almost like a short film. The make-up and props also proved to be very popular too and the video was nominated for several VMA's a year after its release at the start of the award show.

1990's- Britney Spears "Baby one more time" (1998) The music video featured Britney dressed as a school girl dancing in her mini-skirt.

2000's- Lady Gaga "Bad Romance" (2009)- It won video of the year at the 2010 VMA's for its elaborate plotline.

Key conventions found in music videos

Hip-Hop- There are a lot of connotations of wealth presented in this genre of music video, this is shown through the use of money, cars, expensive jewellery etc.

Pop- Pop music videos usually feature high end fashionable clothing and are usually a narrative based around a relationship.

This post has informed me of the most popular videos of all times as well as the generic conventions of some of the most popular videos from a variety of different genres. I looked at genres that interest me thinking that I might use this genre for my my music video however, my opinion has changed since then. In my opinion, an Indie style genre would be a better genre to choose when creating a music video as they usually tend to have a lower budget compare to pop and rap which is more realistic for me and my group to attempt.
